A “corridinho” at Flores do Bairro

March 13
Open since February 1, the Flores do Bairro restaurant appears with a new concept, new menu proposals, with the goal of offering an experience in Portuguese gastronomy, both to Lisbon natural and to tourists who visit and fall in love with Lisbon.

Crambled eggs “corridinho” with croutons and ham slices is one of the delicacies of the new menu with several traditional Portuguese snacks. To taste and share! Chef Vasco Lello has therefore recovered a traditional dish. “Corridinho” was the name given to a dish made with scrambled eggs and leftovers from the meals in Portuguese bars. The name derives from the short time used for making this dish, that is, in a jiff.

Come and taste this and other delicacies at the new Flores do Bairro.

“An image is worth a thousand words”

March 13
We believe an image often better conveys a message, a concept or an experience. Better than many words. The Bairro Alto Hotel will disclose, along with “Diário de Lisboa” http://lisboadiarios.blogspot.pt/, several images we intend to be an incentive to visiting Lisbon. A strong boost for discovering the different spaces, corners, quarter shops, belvederes and monuments which give live to Lisbon. But most of all, we want you to find out the best in Lisbon and to be charmed and fall in love with Lisbon!

Lisbon is known for its seven hills, with plenty of settings to discover. Our proposal for the month of March is the Portas do Sol Belvedere and the Santa Luzia Belvedere.

The Lisbon Boutique Hotel “looks brand new”!

February 13
Located in a historical building from 1845, and after 7 years of success with a fully Portuguese brand, the Bairro Alto Hotel was closed for conservation works. On the 1st of February, the hotel was reopened with renovated spaces, from the bedrooms to the lobby, the new restaurant and the Boutique, reappearing with an updated look and reinforcing its service, quality and reference position in the national and international hotel business.

Come and visit us!

Flores do Bairro is Lisbon’s new restaurant

February 13
The most recent novelty in Lisbon is the Flores do Bairro restaurant, a place that joins tradition and modernity, as the hotel it belongs to – the Bairro Alto Hotel.

The new menu recovers Portuguese traditional flavours and textures, naturally adapted to the contemporaneity of modern cuisine, presenting revisited classics that will surprise our gusts. Salmon tataki with soba pasta and sesame, scrambled eggs with sliced ham and Deep fried battered codfish with spring onions and soy are few of the different options available as appetisers or snacks or for sharing.

Cockle rice with meagre chips, grouper Thai curry with shrimps, Roasted kid leg with rosemary, pork cheeks and pork ribs “Cevadada”, Fresh fish, Flores style, Risotto with season mushrooms and Niza cheese are some of the dishes comprising the new menu by Chef Vasco Lello.

The new Flores do Bairro is the perfect spot for a relaxed and quiet lunch or for a joyful companionship dinner, close to the cultural and trendy Chiado for a stroll or the Bairro Alto and Cais Sodré for a night of fun, starting with a cocktail at Café-bar Ba.

Visit the new Flores do Bairro!

Highlights of 2012

January 13
Come with us now on a journey through the best moments of Bairro Alto Hotel in 2012. We highlight the achievements and success obtained. These moments were only possible thanks to an excellent team, showing a daily motivation and commitment so that the Bairro Alto Hotel is considered the best Boutique Hotel of Portugal. In 2013, we wish to continue on this success path, with you on our side.

Portugal’s Leading Boutique Hotel at the World Travel Awards 2012

We are at the time of the year in which we should reflect and examine the most memorable (positive and less positive) moments of the year. It is only through introspection that we can continue to follow our path with a clear conscience.

One of the most memorable moments of 2012 for Bairro Alto Hotel was definitively the award of Portugal’s Leading Boutique Hotel prize, through the World Travel Awards, for the fourth consecutive year, this time at a gala in the Algarve. This award had a special taste, as it was the only hotel acknowledged outside of this region. We declare our commitment to continue to question ourselves on the decisions to take in order to not only not disappoint those that already know us, but also to constantly surpass their expectations through innovation, dynamism, commitment, and dedication. It is with these values in mind that we wish to all a merry Christmas and view the year of 2013.

Marta Tavares da Silva, administrator of the Bairro Alto Hotel

Bairro Alto Hotel is distinguished by Olimar Reisen and obtains a Certificate of Excellence - Tripadvisor

(…)The most important distinctions that we could obtain are those that reward service and in turn our staff.

In 2013, we will continue to focus our attention in this point! There is no greater reward for a tourist accommodation than the full satisfaction of its guests and 2012 represented a year in which Bairro Alto Hotel and its team were effectively in tune with our dear clients.

See you later!

Jorge Cosme, director-general of Bairro Alto Hotel

International Hotel Awards

“Being considered the finest small hotel in Europe is a great honour not only for us, but also for the destination and the country. This distinction in two consecutive years strengthens the idea that Portugal has a high quality in terms of hotels. Bairro Alto Hotel has had an exemplary path in the improvement of the service quality and the art of hospitality. This hotel is a national and international reference and these awards guarantee us without a shadow of a doubt that we are on the right path.”

Nuno Antunes, Sales & Marketing Manager of Bairro Alto Hotel

Flores Restaurant with 2 Forks in “Lisboa à Prova 2011”

"I would like to thank all those who closely follow Flores Restaurant and the Bairro Alto Hotel universe, those who believe and come every day to the restaurant, as well as in the initiatives we promote, such as the “Week of Azorean Fish” or “Cod Week” or still in initiatives in which we take part such as "Lisbon Restaurant Week" or "Vogue Fashion Night Out".

At Bairro Alto Hotel, we like listening to opinions and suggestions, so that we can provide an increasingly better service, a philosophy which applies to all areas.

We wish to improve continuously and in the best way, being demanding upon ourselves and showing professionalism and humility as present values, thus culminating in the attribution of two forks at the "Lisboa à Prova 2011" contest for Flores Restaurant, which made us very proud.

I now bid you farewell wishing you Seasons Greetings and reminding that we will be back in February 2013 with arms wide open.”

Vasco Lello, Chef of Flores Restaurant

Wine With Spirit at Café Bar Ba

“Another year comes to an end with the certainty that there were many fine moments experienced at Bar Ba Coffee shop. Together with our partner Wine With Spirit, before ever special and regular customers. As years go by it is more and more difficult to separate friendship from professionalism… Small details such as presently knowing, beforehand, which is the favourite drink of a given customer make me love my profession and have a feeling, at the end of each night, of being in tune with life, my profession, and with people.

Because, in life, people are all that matters.”

Daniel Soares, Barman at Café Bar Ba

7th anniversary of Bairro Alto Hotel

“7 years of dedication and passion. 7 years of commitment reaching excellence of service. 7 years at Bairro Alto Hotel – Lisbon’s Soul, at the heart of the city.

Fulfilling our role!”

Paulo Veloso, 1st Receptionist (at the hotel since its opening day)

A square, homage to a poet

January 13
The square in front of Bairro Alto Hotel is a transition point between Bairro Alto and Chiado. At the heart of the square lies the statue of the great Portuguese poet, Luis de Camões, built in 1867.

Under Camões, there are eight statues from major names of Portuguese Literature: Pedro Nunes, Fernão Lopes, Azurara, Castanheda, João de Barros, Sá Menezes, Jerónimo Corte-Real, and Vasco Quevedo Castello-Branco.

It is a square that pays homage to Portuguese culture and to the strength of its ideas. It is a square in which we live daily and which inspires us.

How the Portuguese celebrate Christmas

December 12
Christmas traditions in Portugal take on a strong religious component. Christmas is the most celebrated family occasion. Weeks before the festivities, homes are decorated with light-filled pine trees, holly, garlands and pending decorations, all bearing in mind this important date running each day closer.

The Christmas crib is a “must” and is actually the most traditional element of a Portuguese Christmas: large cribs decorated with moss and rocks where, side by side with the traditional figures – Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus –, we also find shepherds and their flocks, and, of course, the Three Wise Men.

On the 24th of December, the Midnight Mass is the way many choose to start celebrating the day Jesus was born. Afterwards, families get together for supper; others celebrate Christmas on the 25th over lunch or dinner. The gastronomic habits vary from north to south: from codfish to turkey, from the angel hair pasta dessert called aletria to the traditional bolo-rei (literally, the “king-cake”). The filhós (a pumpkin pastry), broas castelares (a small, soft and thin cake made of sweet potato and orange), rabanadas (a sort of French toast), the rice pudding, a cake called the “Christmas trunk” and crème brulée are some of the delicacies that decorate a good Portuguese Christmas table.

The Bairro Alto Hotel team wishes you a wonderful Christmas.

The look of Jorge Cosme over Lisbon

November 12
At a time where several initiatives are taking place in Lisbon with the purpose of disclosing, praising and promoting the best we have in our city, we would like to share with out guests an article where the General Manager of the Bairro Alto Hotel shares his vision on Lisbon.

“When we want to praise something, it is inevitable to make a comparison and highlight unique features. And to do so for Lisbon is a simple exercise. As simple as only something so graceful can be.”
Link to read the full article.

……………………………………………
“When we want to praise something, it is inevitable to make a comparison and highlight unique features. And to do so for Lisbon is a simple exercise. As simple as only something so graceful can be.
Let us start by the river and enter the city through the Cais das Colunas. What other capital arises from the river? What other capital has this main door? There can be other squares with the same size and beauty as the Praça do Comércio, but no other has this entrance-hall-location. It is almost like entering a temple. And from there, the city flows through the hills where we can find belvederes that remind us of where we have been or where we have strolled. This way Lisbon conquers the heart of each visitor. And the magic happens not only to those that visit the city for the firs time. Lisbon is always a charmer.
But this central city could be even more attractive. Its spell could be even more magnetic. When strolling through Lisbon, sometimes I feel that some contemporary touches are still missing, the type of contemporary that does not go against tradition and heritage. It is something that I see occasionally but if it was more present it would make Lisbon even more special, more unique. And I do not mean only in terms of design and architecture, it is also in terms of attitude and initiatives. For those who think it is risky, I suggest something that it is truly from Lisbon – and now a Humanity Heritage, Fado, where artists have been appearing that, although still in line with tradition, give it a new twist that attracts more audience and ensures the future. This new twist, whether in terms of music or even the clothes, but mainly in terms of attitude, mixes the best of the Lisbon tradition with the contemporaneity of Lisbon.
Whenever we do something to give a special touch to this city, we are making this entire region richer. What region of the world can offer a visitor a city as fantastic as Lisbon, a beach as mighty as Guincho or a mountain as magic as Sintra? That is what makes visitors promise to return. And they do return.

A gourmet dish, created by Chef Vasco Lello, of Flores restaurant, can be an excellent choice for this Christmas menu. Select all the products, “go to work” and make a surprise to your family.

Roasted black pork cheeks and “mantle” with small beans, pointed cabbage and quince jam

Ingredients:
4 black pork cheeks (150 grs. roughly)
800 grs. of pork “mantle” with bone
100 grs. of small beans, cumins powder, to taste
1 pointed cabbage (small)
1 quince (medium)
30 grs. of black pork chorizo
1 onion (medium)
2 garlic bulbs
2 carrots (medium)
2 sticks of celery
1 leek
Salt, black pepper, coriander seeds, rosemary, thyme and bay leaves
200 mls. of meat broth
Olive oil
Dry white wine of good quality
2 dls. of honey vinegar
50 grs. of sugar, an half clove, 4 grains of pepper Szechuan

Preparation:
Marinate the cheeks and the “mantle” overnight with salt, black pepper, coriander seeds, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, a trickle of olive oil and a little bit of dry white wine.
Slowly stew the cheeks with the aromatics (garlic, carrot, onion, leeks, celery) and the meat broth until they are tender. Pass the sauce and reduce if necessary.
Roast the “mantle” with the bones, so that it does not dry out, during 5 hours at 130ºC.
Boil the small beans, that were previously soaked overnight, and, with half of that, make a mash. After this add the rest of the small beans, a bit of cumins powder and season to taste.
Stew the cabbage with a bit of chopped onion, garlic, carrot and chorizo, adding some white wine.
Peel and cut the quine in 1,5 cms cubes, add sugar, honey vinegar, clove and pepper Szechuan, cook over medium heat until it becomes jam.
Dish up and serve.

MODALISBOA | TRANSFUSION

23/09/11
The world changed and we are all part of that change. Today,
the tendency is to reduce individual enterprise and take part on a
collective, absolute and responsible dynamic
ModaLisboa | Transfusion will be the reflex of a network that
spreads to action platforms, production values and creative centers.
Transfusion is fusion and transference, vision and “transnationality”.
Our Country is the world. Our goal is the whole. Fashion is ideology,
expression and image. To be outside is to close the eyes, ignore the
senses and live the life in a opposite direction.
Creative revitalization is urgent and vital, and happens in Pátio da
Galé, Lisbon, on October 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th 2001. Four days of
fashion interventions over the market with the anticipation of the
Spring-Summer 2012's new collections.
Rethinking is needed, creation is needed, and sharing is imperative.
Designers have gathered on a sustainable platform, recovering the
values that make the tradition of Portuguese fashion over the last
20 years.
ModaLisboa | Transfusion keeps celebrating two decades of
invention and intensity, pushing up, in every edition, the change of
ideas and tastes, the circulation of new communication networks,
the refreshment of contents and shapes, and the formation of new
sources of creation and codes of conduct.
Transfusion is a capsule for the 20 years of ModaLisboa, but there is
more. We want to keep the leverage effect of an activity that never
stops, with a perpetual movement that challenges the conventional,
turns entrepreneurship stronger and reveals, to the detail, a new
look.

Did you know?

21/09/11
Under a giant canvas awning, Bairro Alto Hotel's “O Terraço” has
been renewed, but at the same time kept the colonial chic spirit
that made it famous all over the world.
With a unique view over the city and the river, and after six years of
intensive usage, there was the need for a increased capacity and for
a refreshing look.

We kept the oriental themed cement mosaic on the pavement and
the black layers on the mansard.
Decoration kept the original concept, but now with tissues in grey
green tones which sometimes combine with the pavement and the
river to create a “perfect symbiosis”, making this idyllic space the
perfect spot to enjoy one of the best views in the world.
In October, we look at the horizon with nostalgia!

Checkmate - Bairro Alto Hotel

27/08/11
From September 8 to 11, within the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out event, the Museu Nacional do Traje presents an exhibition devoted to the 1920’s at the Bairro Alto Hotel.

The Museu Nacional do Traje and the Bairro Alto Hotel started a partnership aimed at publicizing the museum’s collections at the city centre, as a source of innovation and change, allowing a most close interaction between the hotel and the local community, establishing a indispensable meeting point between fashion, lifestyle and the “movida”.

The Bairro Alto Hotel wants – in a unpretentious way – to interact more closely with the local community and, through this cultural platform, to encourage the respect for the past and its identity.

The Museu Nacional do Traje, despite its remarkable architectural and natural framing, is slightly removed of the central circuits, so it will benefit with the disclosure of its collections. The collaboration between both parties, which will offer an important cultural and social contribution to the approach between new publics, history, past and present, starts in September.

Jazz in August

01/08/11
One of the festivals that follows this rule is Jazz em Agosto, which takes place in Lisbon, the portuguese capital, during August.

Supported by Fundação Gulbenkian, one of the most richly equipped foundations in Europe, Jazz em Agosto takes place outdoors on a time of the year marked by the warm weather. Divided between the first two weekends of the month, the concerts takes place at night, in a stage built in the park that is also the home of Fundação's museum. The result is a magical atmosphere halfway between a forest and a garden. In 2009, trumpet player Dave Douglas thanked the audience for the privilege of playing in such a beautiful place. In addition to the music, in the place of the concerts is also possible to hear the call of the ducks from the lake close to the stage, backed by the fresh wind breezes that comes from the Ocean and shake the branches of the trees.

Bairro Alto Hotel History

31/07/11
Ermida do Alecrim vanished with the Earthquake of 1755, that almost destroyed the entire city. However its name is perpetuated on the beautiful street that goes from the Hotel to Tagus River.
On 1770's decade, following the instructions of Lisbon's rebuilding plan of Marquês de Pombal, it was constructed the building with two floors over shops that is now the home of BAIRRO ALTO HOTEL.
After the opening of Largo (square) Luís de Camões in 1860, the building was remodelled. Three floors and a suite with dormer windows replaced the former structure. The threshold windows of the suite, zinc framed, were distinguishable over the slated new rooftop, a sign of the french taste of this period that created an image which remains until nowadays.
This building was the site of a inn that became known as Hotel de l’Europe, managed on that time by a french lady – Madame Radegonde Gachet –, and after that by Ferdinand Piper and also his widow, between 1845 and 1912.

People can find famous Fado houses and new trends side by side, and also a nightlife that keeps going on year after year turning Bairro Alto into the perfect choice for the Portuguese and tourists.
In 2010, Bairro Alto was classified as a Set of Public Interest, an act that reveals the historical, urbanistic, economical and social importance of a place that is a must-see in Lisbon.
