Staying in Lisbon during summer can also be synonymous of fun and sharing unique experiences. Until July 27, enjoy the various shows that include the “Festival ao Largo”.

And to start the evening the best way possible, we suggest a cocktail and dinner while enjoying one of the best views over Lisbon at the Terraço Ba.
Check the program for the “Festival ao Largo” here: http://www.festivalaolargo.com/

Did you know that our rooms are decorated with typically Portuguese colours?

July 14jul14_04

The 55 rooms of Bairro Alto Hotel, including four suites, are painted in typically Portuguese colours: yellow, for the trams, ivory for linen, blue for the Tagus River and red for the Lisbon rooftops. Find out more in our gallery:

“One image is worth a thousand words” *

The Bairro Alto Hotel will disclose, along with Diário de Lisboa http://lisboadiarios.blogspot.pt/, several images we intend to be an incentive to visiting Lisbon. A strong boost for discovering the different spaces, corners, quarter shops, belvederes and monuments which give live to Lisbon. But most of all, we want you to find out the best in Lisbon and to be charmed and fall in love with Lisbon!

“One image is worth a thousand words” *

June 14jun14_05

In June, celebrating the Patron Saints, Lisbon is celebrating, filled with colours and a contagious joy. Several typical quarters (Alfama, Bica and Bairro Alto, where our hotel is located) continue the tradition of organizing popular fests with Portuguese music, sweet basil pots and charcoal grilled sardines. At Avenida da Liberdade, the main event is the parade, where the different quarters of the city are represented in a competition for the best performance. June is undoubtedly the best month to visit and know Lisbon.

* We believe an image often better conveys a message, a concept or an experience. Better than many words.

9 years …

May 14mai14_01

In May, the Bairro Alto Hotel will celebrate yet another anniversary. It seems it was just yesterday that the Bairro Alto Hotel was inaugurated, with an innovative concept at the time, being the first 5-star boutique hotel. Today, 9 years later, there are so many stories to be told, so many different nationalities have cruised our lobby, an excellent team, a different and customized product, emblematic spaces, a magnificent view, national and international awards... these are some of the reasons why we are so proud and why we want to go even farther. True to our initial values, continue to surprise is our mission! A goal that allows us to live in full the experience of working at Bairro Alto Hotel and welcoming and introducing Lisbon to tourists and even to Lisbon naturals. Congratulations Bairro Alto Hotel!

Happy New Year

January 14jan14_01

Time
“Who had this brilliant idea
of cutting the time in slices
Slices which were named YEARS
He was a genius individual who
got to industrialize hope
by making it work to the limit
of exhaustion.

Twelve months are enough to make any human being get tired and have a breakdown.
Then, it comes the miracle of renovation. Everything starts all over again, with another number and another wish to believe that from now on it is going to be different.”

The Bairro Alto Hotel wishes you a very Happy New Year and that some moments be shared with us!

Suggestion for starting a magical 2014

January 14jan14_04

The Cirque du Soleil will present for the first time in Lisbon its show “Dralion”, from 1 to 12 January, at Meo Arena. A fusion between the Chinese tradition of acrobatic arts, with over 3000 years of history, with the multidisciplinary approach of the Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws inspiration from the Eastern philosophy and its non-stoppable quest for harmony between Man and Nature.

A suggestion for starting 2014 with a great show for all the family.

Saying goodbye to hot Summer days is not always easy. But not all is as gray as cold and rainy days, if one thinks of the delicious dishes from the restaurant Flores do Bairro that return to our menu after the end of Summer.

The original “Cevadada” with Celtic pork chops and cheeks is, once again, one of the strong points of Chef Vasco Lello. It’s the inevitable return of a creation thought for the launching menu of the new restaurant concept inaugurated in February. And guests can end their meal with the sweetest novelty in the menu, the Chocolate Jubilee.

A new and special Embassy was recently inaugurated at Príncipe Real. The Ribeiro da Cunha Mansion, a neo-Arab building from the 19th century, gained new life and is now a space dedicated to fashion, lifestyle and culture.

The brands represented there are mainly Portuguese, from fashion to cosmetics, art or decoration, and propose a new shopping spot in the capital, the “Embaixada”. A new life for a historical building. Good news for making Lisbon even more gracious and cosmopolitan. More pictures of the “Embaixada” at Blog Diário de Lisboa or Facebook Diário de Lisboa.

* We believe an image often better conveys a message, a concept or an experience. Better than many words.

Hot summer days will remain during September and nothing beats enjoying the sun and the open spaces. We recommend a visit to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Park. If you haven’t visited it yet, you will discover one of the most beautiful parks in Lisbon. But if you have visited it already, we suggest you discover the new terrace and taste the delicious traditional ice creams. Something you can’t miss!

Summer in the City?ago13_01

August 13

Unlike most people, do you think August is the best month to visit and discover Lisbon?  If so, the Bairro Alto Hotel invites you to enjoy a fantastic and unparalleled view over the city of Lisbon while sipping a delicious cocktail.

Our suggestion: BA Ice Tea – a refreshing drink with pineapple, coconut and mint. Ideal for those hot and calm
August days in Lisbon.

Café Bar Ba – a place for a nice eveningago13_02

August 13

At Café Bar Ba you can enjoy during the hot August month, fresh and light salads in addition to a relaxed setting with a judicious musical selection.

Duck salad – duck breast, apple and celery with mayonnaise, mixed lettuce, orange slices and orange vinaigrette – and Tuna Salad – home-made tuna conserve with green beans, carrots, purple onion, mixed lettuce, partridge eggs and caper vinaigrette – these are our suggestions for salads to taste along with a nice white or green wine.

New flavours at restaurant Flores do Bairroago13_03

August 13

The novelties at the Restaurant Flores do Bairro menu are brought by Chef Vasco Lello and the purpose is to pay homage to the Summer. New dishes, lighter and fresher, to snack and share.

Gazpacho with sardine and oregano on toast, Beef ham with raisin and nuts vinaigrette, Tuna Carpaccio with lemon vinaigrette and chives, Fish soup with mint and Duck gizzard with tomato sauce are the new “appetizers” for tasting in the menu.

For fish, the novelty is the Roasted Cod with warm chickpeas, tomato and spinach salad; for the meat, the chef has two new suggestions: Black pork sirloin with clams, “Alentejana” style, and Roast Beef at Flores do Bairro.

The sweet, and fresh, novelty of the menu is the “Jubileu de Chocolate”. A chocolate blast that can be discovered and tasted in a small sealed flask. Pudding, mousse, ganache and chocolate meringue comprise the layers of the “Jubileu de Chocolate”.

Enjoy the warm August days for strolling at Bairro Alto, dine at restaurant Flores do Bairro and end your night with one of the best views over the city at the BA Terrace. Nothing beats this!

Nights at Bairroago13_04

August 13

The Portuguese capital is a city that never sleeps. In Lisbon, you can always start your evening with a drink at one of the city’s belvederes or at a Bairro Alto bar or typical restaurant and dance the night away until morning.

Bairro Alto is one of the most traditional quarters of the city and the most popular area in Lisbon for those who enjoy nightlife. For those visiting Lisbon, it is mandatory to wander through the narrow streets of this quarter. The biggest advantage of Bairro Alto is its diversity, both in terms of restaurants and bars.

“An image is worth a thousand words” *ago13_05

August 13

Up to September, music will fill the historical streets and squares, parks and belvederes, hotels, museums and even markets, thanks to the Out Jazz Festival. Every Friday and Sunday, until sunset!

Gastronomic novelties at the Bairro Alto Hoteljul13_02

July 13

The arrival of summer can be synonymous of new cocktails but also of fresh and light dishes to taste. New salads at the Ba Terrace and at Café Bar Ba, as well as the launching of new tastes at the Flores do Bairro Restaurant are the latest novelties proposed by Chef Vasco Lello for this season.

Duck Salad – duck breast, apple and celery with mayonnaise, mixed lettuce, orange slices and orange vinaigrette, and Tuna Salad – home-made tuna conserves, green beans, carrots, onion, mixed lettuce, partridge eggs and caper vinaigrette; these are the two new salads available at the Ba Terrace and at the Café Bar Ba. Gazpacho with sardine and oregano toast, beef ham with raisins and nuts vinaigrette, Tuna Carpaccio with lemon vinaigrette and chives, Fish soup with mint and Duck gizzard with tomato sauce are the new “appetizers” for tasting in the menu.

For fish, the novelty is the Roasted Cod with warm chickpeas, tomato and spinach salad; as for the meat, the chef has two new suggestions: Black pork sirloin with clams, “Alentejana” style, and Roast Beef at Flores do Bairro. For those who are not fans of fish nor meat, the new menu choices include a Goat Cheese salad with flowers and pine nuts and a Peas and Basil Risotto.

Try the new delicacies of Flores do Bairro and don’t miss the opportunity of tasting, after or before your gastronomic experience, the best Mojito in Lisbon at Café Bar Ba or at the Ba Terrace.

Flores do Bairro and Jubileu create a partnershipjul13_04

July 13

The Flores do Bairro, the restaurant of the Bairro Alto Hotel, together with Imperial, the traditional chocolates company, launch a tasteful novelty that will please those who appreciate exclusive favours – the dessert “Jubileu de Chocolate”. After launching the new concept in February, Chef Vasco Lello was unstoppable and once again has surprised us all with his creativity.

A tasteful and fresh novelty, a chocolate blast that can be discovered and tasted in a small sealed flask. Pudding, mousse, ganache and chocolate meringue comprise the layers of the “Jubileu de Chocolate”.

The dessert is the result of the combination of the different chocolates from the brand “Jubileu”. The “Jubileu Premium Leite” (milk chocolate) that originated the chocolate pudding, the Jubileu Plus Noir – caramelized chocolate nuggets were used for the chocolate mousse, and finally, for the ganache, Chef Vasco Lello selected Jubileu Plus Noir – Fleur de Sel.

You can’t miss this tasteful opportunity!

One of the most iconic elements of the city, Tram 28 crosses Lisbon from the Prazeres quarter to Graça, running right along the Bairro Alto Hotel. It is a long path across the hills and narrow streets of the city, with the sound of the bell ringing along the way. "28" is more than a public transport, it is an original way of visiting Lisbon and knowing its history.

The city of Lisbon will be celebrating its Patron Saint, on Saint Anthony’s Day, during the month of June. Lisbon old quarters (Alfama, Bica, Bairro Alto) will follow the tradition of the charcoal-grilled sardines and beer on the streets on the night of June 12. The parade at Avenida da Liberdade, where the different city quarters are represented in a competition for the best “Marcha” will be the main event. We suggest you take a look of some pictures in here:
http://lisboadiarios.blogspot.pt/2012/06/melhor-noite-de-lisboa-mais-fotos-no.html

Also in June, on the 10th, we will be celebrating the Day of Portugal, of Camões and of the Portuguese Communities. This is also the day we remember the death of  Luís Vaz de Camões in 1580. Did you know that...? Luís Vaz de Camões is considered the greatest Portuguese poet. The square in front of Bairro Alto Hotel has a statue paying homage to this poet. Beneath it, other 8 statues lie representing eight major Portuguese literature names: Pedro Nunes, Fernão Lopes, Azurara, Castanheda, João de Barros, Sá Menezes, Jerónimo Corte-Real and Vasco Quevedo Castello-Branco.

8th anniversary of the Bairro Alto Hotel mai13_01

May 13

The Bairro Alto Hotel will celebrate in May its 8th anniversary. Inaugurated in 2005 as the first 5-star boutique hotel, it is nowadays a reference in the hotel sector, having won several national and international awards.

Throughout these 8 years, a lot has happened at the Bairro Alto Hotel. Plenty of stories, successes, several international awards, unique moments and close friendships. And having friends sharing their stories is a real treasure. So, we have invited a group of people, who are already friends, who have travelled with us throughout these 8 years, to share their experiences or simply describe what the Bairro Alto Hotel means to them.

We share with you the opinion and view of some of our clients and friends, making us proud of these 8 years:

Mafalda Arnauth
"I have been lucky enough to find in plenty of my travels some places that I can really call Home, considering the cosiness and warmness of the place.
But the Bairro Alto Hotel will always have a deeper meaning in this Home symbology, due to the particularities of the unique moments I was able to enjoy at Bairro Alto Hotel, often before or after crucial concerts in my career or fundamental promotion actions for the many moments I have lived, or simply as a visitor. I always felt touched by the incredible hospitality of the staff; I even dare to call it Nest; Refuge; Shelter.
The relation I have with the design of the hotel, the rooms, each corner allows me to feel protected at any time and never out of context and it is this rapport with the atmosphere that I always keep with me, regardless of the time that goes by without returning there.
I remember one night when, having attended a somewhat “uninspired” and disturbing concert, along with some friends in a nearby theatre, we looked for “consolation” at the Restaurante Flores and we were widely compensated thanks to the kindness, amazing gastronomy and reaffirmation of what I already knew we could find at BAH: a Soul!
And I was eternally grateful for knowing that there is a place where I can always return with confidence.
Congratulations to the Bairro Alto Hotel! And a long life…"

São José Correia
Prologue of "Simone and the sky"

Yes?
Hi, are you there already?
Yes.
Me too.
I know. Look behind.
I’m looking.
Look up.
Up?
Yes. To your left side.
Is that you?
Come to 410.

The plate at the door read Bairro Alto Hotel.
Someone opened the door and he went in.
Can I help you?
Yes, the lift...
Right this way, sir. I’ll show you.
It is not necessary.
Please, I insist.

With the noise of the city beyond the glass door,
the sound of the anxious heart could be heard in the soft and quiet stone of the lobby.

Here you are.
Thank you.

He had this strange feeling
of entering a space ship with a thousand metal wires.
And the truth is that he had entered a space lift going to heaven.
Heaven 410.

Eduardo Souto de Moura
Room one hundred and one…
The Bairro Alto Hotel is just 20 meters away from my office in Lisbon. The staff is efficient and nice as required: nor too aloof nor to close. Room 401 is the room I always get. The walls are of a common beige, the furniture is classic, anonymous and the carpet is of a water green colour over covering the floor. The room has a table where I can draw with direct light from the window facing the Church of Our Lady of Incarnation. The walls have no paintings which is beneficial for the eyes and the mind... Room 401 is almost like any other room. But what makes it different is that, from the bathroom with direct light, one can see the river Tagus between Pombaline stacks – and that is beneficial for the eyes and the mind – first thing in the morning.

Vegetarian Salad, Papaya Salad and Cottage Cheese and Vegetarian Sandwich are some of the lighter and healthier novelties of the menu, a pleasant option for a relaxed and quick lunch. And if you want to take the most of this experience, the Terraço BA has also launched new cocktails: Challenge (gin with cardamom seeds, lavender and lime juice),Strawberry Daiquiri and Passion fruit Caipirinha.

Despite the novelties of the menu, our staples like the Sirloin Steak Sandwich with Bolo do Caco and Island Cheese or the Bairro Alto Hamburger are still present; likewise, our famous Mojito, the best in town, could not be forgotten.

Summer time: from 12:30 to 00:00

“An image is worth a thousand words”abr13_05

April 13

We believe an image often better conveys a message, a concept or an experience. Better than many words.

The new Burel Factory shop, at Chiado, is the most recent novelty in Lisbon and we advise you to discover it in April. A shop where tradition and modernity go hand in hand. See the wonderful photos in the Diário de Lisboa blog and pay them a visit.
